Today, we join in with the Pakistani community in Canada and around the world in celebrating Pakistan’s Independence Day.
On this day in 1947, the Dominion of Pakistan became independent from British rule, and joined the Commonwealth, ending the British Raj.
Ontario has long been home to a diverse and vibrant Pakistani community, and today is home to over 160,000 Pakistanis of all stripes, including Punjabi, Kashmiri, Sindhi, Baloch, Muhajir and Pashtun Ontarians. Pakistani Ontarians are hard-working and have made many important contributions to this province. They contribute to every aspect of life in Ontario, from business to community service.
While this year’s celebrations will be different than other years, I know the community will continue to be resilient and strong.
On behalf of the Ontario Liberal Party, I want to extend my best wishes to all those celebrating Pakistan Independence Day.
