Statement From Steven Del Duca on Tamil Black July

Today we remember the thousands of Tamil people who were killed in the tragic and senseless pogroms of 1983.

Black July was a week of deadly pogroms and riots in late July 1983, targeting the Tamils of Sri Lanka. Hundreds of Tamils were killed and thousands injured and wounded in a horrific series of attacks. Over a hundred thousand Tamils were left homeless.

It was a gruesome and horrific start to the violent conflict in Sri Lanka that raged for over a quarter of a century.

I join with all of those mourning their family, friends and neighbors lost during the conflict in Sri Lanka and during Black July.

On behalf of the Ontario Liberal Party, I extend my deepest sympathies to Tamil-Ontarians, and all of those who suffered, and join you in commemorating those lost in this terrible period.
