TORONTO – Ontario Liberal Leader, Steven Del Duca issued the following statement:
“Today, Canadians will mark the National Day of Remembrance of the Quebec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia.
Five years ago, in 2017, a gunman entered a place of worship in the middle of a prayer in congregation, and opened fire on Muslim worshippers, killing six and injuring many more.
It was a tragic attack that left Muslims across Canada fearful for their own safety, even in places of worship, where everyone should feel safe. As Ontarians and as Canadians, we need to stand with the Muslim community against the hateful Islamophobia that too often leads to violence.
Ontario Liberals will always stand with the Muslim community against Islamophobia.
Today, many of us are wearing the green square that symbolizes the green carpet of the mosque where the victims last stood to pray. We wear it to remember the victims and survivors of the Quebec City mosque attack and as a commitment to stand against Islamophobia in all its forms.
I will also wear it as a sign that we can, and must do better.
I invite everyone to join me and so many others in wearing a green square to stand against Islamophobia and hate, and for a better future for all Canadians.”
