Statement from MPP Kathleen Wynne, Ontario Liberal Education Critic

Ontario PC Party passes resolution that endorses discrimination.

Today at the Progressive Conservative Convention, members voted to approve
Tanya Granic Allen’s resolution stating that gender identity is not real and to make it
the policy of the government to remove it from Ontario’s curriculum.

Every student in Ontario deserves the right to go to school in a safe and inclusive
environment. They also have to right to have their identity acknowledged. This
resolution is a direct endorsement of discrimination by Doug Ford’s PC Party.

Stigmatizing gender identity and removing any mention of it in our schools will put
the safety of children at risk during an incredibly vulnerable and sensitive time in their
lives.

It is dangerous, reckless and irresponsible for a political party to endorse
discrimination and tell people that how they identify themselves is not real.

The Premier has a responsibility to ensure that all Ontarians can live in this province
free from discrimination, especially when that discrimination originates from the
grassroots of his own political party. I call on Premier Doug Ford to immediately
denounce this dangerous resolution.
