Riding Commitment Motion

The Ontario Liberal Party is winding down the financial dependence on PLA’s as the party transitions to a model of sustainable individual giving.

For decades, OLP requested transfers from PLA’s to the party in the form of an annual riding commitment. Each year on January 1st, ridings would be charged a dollar amount of $8,000.00 or $1,000.00 based upon the riding be held by a sitting member or not. (Previously the $1,000.00 was $4,000.00).

Given the new financial measures being implemented by Executive Council and through consultation, a decision as been made to cease the revenue model of riding commitments from PLA’s.

While OLP recognizes the opportunity to end riding commitments with financial controls in place, it also recognizes that the current financial situation means the elimination must be completed in steps, and is not in the position to forgive outstanding commitments.

BE IT RESOLVED that the riding commitments from all PLAs paid to the OLP beginning annually on January 1st will be as follows:

  • 2019 – 75% of Subsidy received from Elections Ontario
  • 2020 – 75% of Subsidy received from Elections Ontario
  • 2021 – 50% of Subsidy received from Elections Ontario
  • 2022 – $1,500
  • 2023 – $1,000
  • 2024 – 0

FURTHER, if the PLA wishes to issue the five-year payment in full, OLP will consider their obligation met should all previous commitments be reconciled.

FURTHER, OLP will circulate quarterly via email to all Provincial Council Members (includes PLA Presidents), PLA CFO’s and 2018 Candidates a spreadsheet of all 124 ridings along with the remaining riding commitments, to wind down the five year program.
