Statement from Steven Del Duca on Holodomor Memorial Day

Today, Steven Del Duca, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, released the following statement:

“Today, we remember the millions of victims who were mercilessly killed as a result of the Holodomor – the famine genocide perpetrated by Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin against the Ukrainian people between the years of 1932 and 1933.

We join with Ukrainian communities in Ontario, across Canada, and around the world, commemorating the memory of those who perished, honouring the survivors, and paying tribute to the resiliency of the Ukrainian people who endured in the face of such horror.

For decades, the horrors and the atrocities suffered by Ukrainians during the Holodomor were hidden from the world and denied.

On Holodomor Memorial Day, we stand together to reflect on one of the darkest chapters in history and we vow never to forget.

That is why we teach the Holodomor in our schools in Ontario, and it’s why I, and the entire Ontario Liberal Party remain committed to strengthening Ontario’s relationship with Ukraine, and ensuring the Holodomor is never forgotten.

Ontario Liberals are proud to have worked with the Ukrainian Canadian community to ensure that the Holodomor is taught in our schools and to ensure funding support for the Holodomor Mobile Classroom.

These lessons of history serve us well as we stand in solidarity today with the people of Ukraine in their struggle to defend homeland’s sovereignty and territorial integrity against Russian aggression.

May the memory of the victims of the Holodomor be eternal.

Vichna Yim Pamyat.”
