TORONTO – Steven Del Duca, Leader of the Ontario Liberals, made the following statement:
“Doug Ford’s secret reward for his friend, Charles McVety, is straight out of the American Republican playbook, but rewarding bigotry is almost unheard of in Ontario.”
“While rewarding his personal friends with government favours is nothing new for Doug Ford, a reward for somebody who embodies hatred, bigotry, Islamophobia and homophobia is something I have never seen in Ontario. But it happens across the border.”
“On the eve of a US election, where voters face a stark choice, Doug Ford is playing divisive US-style political games right here at home.”
“While Ford has been trying to distance himself from the Republicans recently, just this year he made comments in support of them, saying ‘We hope the election’s going to turn out the right way. Literally the right way.’ If Ford really cares about distancing himself, he’ll immediately amend his legislation to remove the reward for McVety.”
“Ontario cannot embrace the bigotry Charles McVety and the Republicans stand for. If Doug Ford can’t stand against their views, he stands with them.”
