Conservative Energy ‘Plan’ Fails to Address Short-Term Needs

OTTAWA, ONJohn Fraser, MPP for Ottawa South and Interim Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, has released the following statement in response to the release of the provincial government’s new energy ‘plan’:

“When it comes to electricity, Ontarians want three things: reliable supply, stable prices and clean generation. Since coming to power, the Ford Conservatives have been asleep at the switch when it comes to the electricity system we all depend on.

“Now they are scrambling. Ontario is the only jurisdiction in Canada at risk of experiencing energy shortfalls this summer — all because Doug Ford spent hundreds of millions of dollars to cancel renewable energy contracts put in place by the previous Liberal government.

“Experts warned us that record-breaking heat waves, the adoption of electric vehicles, and the development of new homes would cause our electricity demand to skyrocket. The Ford Conservatives refused to listen and now the reliability, and affordability, of our electricity is in question.

“While it’s encouraging to see the commitment to long-term investments, those investments will not address Ontario’s short- and medium-term needs.”
