Ontario NDP Blocks Support For Struggling Restaurants

TORONTO – Ontario NDP MPPs just blocked a Liberal motion to immediately cap food delivery fees and help restaurants remain open without in person dining. Ontario Liberals have been pushing this initiative for months.

“After months of delays from Doug Ford it is simply shameful that the NDP, under Andrea Horwath’s leadership, would refuse to support restaurants as they face bankruptcies due to COVID restrictions,” said Ontario Liberal Party (OLP) Leader, Steven Del Duca. “They owe restaurant owners and employees an apology.”

The proposal was originally put forward by OLP MPP Amanda Simard in May 2020, but Doug Ford and Andrea Horwath both ignored the pleas from business owners at the time. Now, Horwath is playing political games and delaying this desperately needed relief, all so the NDP can oppose for the sake of opposing.

“I am extremely disappointed that the NDP has made relief for struggling restaurants a political game,” said MPP Simard.

The Liberal motion would have allowed an immediate vote on the new legislation, now business owners will be forced to wait longer for this important relief. The NDP have let down restaurants who have been looking to the province for support.
