Steven Del Duca Makes Statement Celebrating Jamaican Independence Day

In Jamaica and all around the world, today marks the 58th annual Jamaican Independence Day.

After centuries of Spanish colonization and over three centuries of British rule in the colony, the people of Jamaica declared their independence on August 6, 1962. The path to independence for the people of Jamaica was fraught but after a long process of decolonization, self-government was established and Jamaica became a free nation as a member of the Commonwealth.

While the legacy of colonialism still lives in Jamaica, today is a day to celebrate all that Jamaicans have achieved, as well as the many contributions of the thousands of Jamaican-Ontarians who call this province home.

While usually Toronto’s Jamaican community hosts many celebrations, this year’s celebrations will be virtual. We look forward to the day when we can celebrate with great music and company in person.

On behalf of the Ontario Liberal Party I wish all those celebrating, in Ontario and around the world, a very happy Jamaican Independence Day!
