Statement on Toronto’s 90th Homicide: MPP Hunter, MPP Scarborough-Guildwood

TORONTO, ON – “The deeply saddening news of Toronto’s 90th homicide brings great concern to a community of seniors, families and individuals who deserve to feel safe in their community –  this most recent act of violence is just one of 90 fatal shootings in Toronto this year.

All three levels of government need to come together and address the issue of gun violence. Our streets and our communities must be places where individuals feel safe.

One life lost to gun violence is a tragedy – 90 is an epidemic.

The free-flow of weapons and ammunition is destroying our communities. Individuals who deserve safety are living in constant fear something might happen to them or their loved ones.

All levels of government need to work together and make it more difficult for people to access guns and ammunition. Gun violence is not a by-product of living in a large city. It must get better.

Things are getting worse – awful records are being set which tells me, as the violence increases so should the actions to stop it. Gun violence needs to be a top priority of legislators in this City and in the province of Ontario. It is not just a Toronto issue. We must work to bring these numbers down before they continue to climb.”
