Ontario’s Liberals Renew Promise to Put Teachers and Students First

Liberals to put education at the centre of economic plan

TORONTO, ON – Today, Bonnie Crombie, Leader of Ontario’s Liberals, delivered remarks at the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario—renewing a promise to be the strong partner our teachers, education workers, support personnel, and early childhood educators deserve.

“If elected Premier, I will put education at the centre of my economic plan. It’s the right thing to do for our economy, and for our children. Because without high-quality education, our economy will falter.

Without growth, we can’t hire more family doctors, or build roads and bridges, or fix our schools, lower our class sizes, address the shortcomings in the funding formula, and give you what you need in your classrooms. Let me say it loud and clear—education is economic policy. We can’t compete with the world without it.”

— Bonnie Crombie, Leader of Ontario’s Liberals

Unlike Doug Ford and the Conservatives, Ontario’s Liberals believe you deserve so much more than a Premier who puts his rich friends before teachers and students.

“We need to put teachers, early childhood educators, special-ed teachers, support staff, and students first.

We also need to fix our schools: the repair backlog has reached a whopping $16 billion. We need to ensure that kids and teachers have access to modern technology, that the roofs are not leaking, that washrooms work, and that nobody suffers during a heatwave due to a lack of AC.

My Ontario Liberal government will respect the collective bargaining process. You won’t see me invoke the notwithstanding clause.

Here’s the bottom line—you need and deserve more from your government. More support for small and rural schools, more safe ways for kids to get to class, more collaboration. That is why I’m here today. Because Ontario needs you. Your students need you.

Together, we can deliver the progress the people of Ontario deserve.”
