12 Better Ways to Spend $1 Billion

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 4, 2024

QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario’s Liberals know that families are struggling, yet instead of helping, Doug Ford is giving away $1 billion to his friends and insiders.

“A billion dollars can transform communities, yet Doug Ford chose to recklessly spend it on getting booze in big-box stores a year early. Once again, he’s favouring wealthy insiders while ordinary Ontarians continue to struggle,” stated Bonnie Crombie, Leader of Ontario’s Liberals, today as she highlighted alternative, impactful ways to spend $1 Billion.

“Ontario deserves better, it’s time for change,” Crombie asserted.

Here are twelve $1-billion investments that could make a difference in people’s lives, rather than just enriching Doug Ford’s friends:

  1. Hire 13,260 new nurses or 10,500 teachers
  2. Build a brand-new hospital
  3. Build 7,875 affordable housing units
  4. Double funding for school repairs
  5. Cut the small business tax rate in half for two years
  6. Make homes more affordable by delivering a 25% rebate on Development Charges for a year
  7. Reinstate GO train service between Toronto and London
  8. Deliver two-way all-day GO service between Toronto and Niagara Falls
  9. Widen the rest of Highway 69 in northern Ontario
  10. Boost wages for 147,000 PSWs to $25 / hour
  11. Provide 300,000 Ontarians with a 50% rebate for installing heat pumps
  12. Install 7,000 fast, public EV chargers for Ontario drivers
