September 28, 2021 – Liberals in Ottawa Centre have nominated Katie Gibbs, a scientist, environmentalist, and community leader, as their Ontario Liberal Party (OLP) candidate for the next provincial election.
“Katie is a strong leader who recognizes the challenges faced by residents in Ottawa Centre, and all across Ontario,” said OLP Leader, Steven Del Duca. “Katie has spent years actively fighting to improve her community, and at Queen’s Park, she will be a strong advocate for issues like combating climate change and improving our healthcare system.
While completing her Ph.D. at the University of Ottawa in Biology, Gibbs was one of the lead organizers of the “Death of Evidence” rally—one of the largest science rallies in Canadian history. Gibbs also co-founded Evidence for Democracy, Canada’s leading, national, non-partisan, and not-for-profit organization promoting science and the transparent use of evidence in government decision-making. Gibbs has served on many governance and advisory boards including the Institute On Governance’s Science and Innovation Advisory Committee, the Multi-Stakeholder Forum on Open Government, and Ecology Ottawa.
“With immediate challenges like health care and affordable housing affecting so many in our community and a looming climate crisis on the horizon, we need politicians who aren’t afraid to listen to experts and take bold action,” said Gibbs. “I can’t wait to get to work listening to the concerns of Ottawa Centre residents and pushing for progressive, evidence-based policies to make our community and all of Ontario more equitable and sustainable.”
