No One is Above the Law: MPP Shamji calls for Steve Clark to be Reprimanded

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

7 October 2026

QUEEN’S PARK, ON – Today, Dr. Adil Shamji, Member of Provincial Parliament for Don Valley East sent a letter to the Government House Leader, Steve Clark, regarding the outstanding matter of the Integrity Commissioner’s recommendation that he be reprimanded for his misconduct during the Greenbelt scandal.

“Saturday will mark three years since the launch of an investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police into alleged criminal misconduct involving land swaps in Ontario’s Greenbelt. While that investigation continues to be ongoing, another investigation remains unresolved,” said Shamji.

On August 30, 2023, Ontario’s Integrity Commissioner found that Steve Clark violated the Members’ Integrity Act, 1994 by improperly furthering developers’ private interests in the Greenbelt land selection process. The Commissioner concluded Clark breached conflict of interest and insider information rules and recommended that he be reprimanded.

Despite this, Steve Clark has never been reprimanded. Ford’s Conservatives have refused to hold the required debate and vote in the Legislature to accept the Integrity Commissioner’s recommendation. “

No one should be above the law,” said Shamji. “Ignoring the Integrity Commissioner’s report and failing to act on the recommendation that Clark be reprimanded allows him to escape accountability and sends a message that the law applies to everyone except for Doug Ford and his Conservatives.”

MPP Shamji’s letter, delivered today, calls on the Government House Leader to immediately schedule a debate so that Steve Clark can finally be held accountable.

However, in an ironic twist, the Government House Leader – who controls whether this debate will happen – is Steve Clark, the same person the Integrity Commissioner recommends disciplining. This hypocrisy underscores the flawed argument that Clark’s resignation as Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, only to be immediately promoted to one of the most powerful positions in the Legislature, was an acceptable substitute for the Integrity Commissioner’s ruling.

“Steve Clark must immediately schedule a debate and vote as soon as is feasible once the House reconvenes later this month. This would be the only way to truly demonstrate accountability and fulfill the government’s obligations under the Member’s Integrity Act.

“Without doing so, it is a warning that Ontarians can expect more excuses and even less integrity amidst mounting scandals such as private career colleges and the Skills Development Fund, which continue to rock Doug Ford’s government.”
