DEL DUCA: Federal Child Care Proposal is Welcome, but Doug Ford Won’t Implement It

TORONTO – Steven Del Duca, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, issued the following statement:

“The federal government’s new budget proposes a bold, forward thinking proposal for child care, in partnership with provinces. Ontario Liberals support the proposal, and we would be leading partners with the federal government on getting it done.

Women, and especially racialized women, are being left behind as Ontario’s economy continues to grapple with COVID-19, so we need to make sure programs like child care are funded properly to help fight the she-cession. Ontario Liberals would be steadfast partners with the federal government on fighting to make sure women can lead our economic recovery.

Unfortunately given Doug Ford’s record, there is no reason to believe he will cooperate and implement the program in a way that benefits those who need it most. He doesn’t care about child care during a pandemic, why would he outside of one?

Even now, Doug Ford continues to ignore Ontario Liberal calls to vaccinate all child care workers. He expects essential workers, on the frontlines during the third wave, to keep going to work unvaccinated, while sending their children to child care providers who are also unvaccinated. It’s a recipe for disaster.

Doug Ford must resign before he botches child care next. We can’t trust him to work with the federal government on this.”
