Statement on Canadian-U.S. Trade Relations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

24 October 2025

QUEEN’S PARK – Today, the Ontario Liberal Caucus released the following statement in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement that trade negotiations with Canada have now concluded.

This is a deeply concerning development. Our trade with the United States affects the lives of millions of families, not just in Ontario but across Canada.

Trade negotiations with our largest trading partner are a team effort – one that requires complex planning, coordination and discipline.

Donald Trump is not a friend to Ontario families, and when you’re negotiating with someone like him, you have to be very careful not to give them another card to play.

There are a lot of questions to ask about what happened here, but the most important thing right now is to focus on what Ontario families need.

As a country we have to stand together.

We support Prime Minister Mark Carney’s efforts to expand our trade relations beyond the U.S.

Premier Ford needs to focus on what he and Ontario can do to protect jobs, workers, and our economy. We need a plan for the Stellantis workers in Brampton, the Holsag workers in Lindsay, the Crown Royal workers in Amherstburg, and the Interfor workers in Ear Falls.

Negotiations with the U.S. will resume. Right now, it is crucial that every member of the Legislature focuses on what they can do to deliver the things Ontario families need: jobs, healthcare, education, and housing.”
