Ontario Renters Require Real Rent Control

OTTAWA, ON – John Fraser, MPP for Ottawa South and Interim Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, has issued the following statement in response to the introduction of Bill 97:

“It’s great to see the Conservatives finally come around on the need to protect renters, but this government’s problem has always been their inability to actually deliver on their promises.

“One of the very first things this Conservative government did when they took office was approve the highest rent increase in almost a decade under the guise of a ‘cap,’ while also removing rent control protections that safeguarded Ontario families from being priced out of their own home.

“And, just recently, Ford’s Minister of Housing conceded that the government’s ability to meet their own goal of building 1.5 million homes by 2031 was ‘out of their control.’

“Ontarians deserve better — they deserve a government that will take real action to address the affordability crisis and make life easier for the hardworking families that call this province home.

“Ontario Liberals are calling on the Conservatives to reintroduce the rent control protections they callously took away.”
