QUEEN’S PARK — Today, Rob Cerjanec, MPP for Ajax and Ontario Liberal Critic for Tourism, Culture and Sport, introduced the Stop Ripping Off Fans Act, 2025 — legislation that would restore an Ontario Liberal consumer protection law repealed by Ford’s Conservatives shortly after he came to power.
The bill would reinstate the 2017 Ontario Liberal cap on ticket resale prices, which prohibited reselling tickets for more than 50 per cent above their original face value. Ford’s government scrapped the cap in their 2019 budget, enriching major resale companies while driving up prices for Ontario families.
“Doug Ford talks tough about affordability, but tickets are still out of reach for most Ontarians,” said MPP Cerjanec. “Families shouldn’t have to choose between groceries and taking their kids to a concert or a game. This bill puts people before profits — and gives Ford a chance to right his wrong.”
Ontario Liberal Parliamentary Leader MPP John Fraser said the government has no excuse not to act. “Ford’s words are cheap, but tickets aren’t,” said Fraser. “He says he wants fairness, yet he tore up our law that made tickets affordable and protected consumers. This bill gives him a second chance — if he votes for it, it’ll might be his best flip-flop yet.”
Under the proposed Stop Ripping Off Fans Act, resale platforms and individual sellers would be prohibited from listing tickets at more than 50 per cent above their original price, including service fees but excluding taxes. The change would help push exploitative mark-ups off mainstream resale sites and restore fairness to the market.
Ontarians shouldn’t be gouged by ticket giants like Ticketmaster. Our policy put people first while Ford’s government put profits first.
“Tickets aren’t investment opportunities — they’re access to culture, art, and sport,” added Cerjanec. “It’s time we put fans first again.”
