QUEEN’S PARK — The Ontario Liberal Caucus has tabled an Opposition Day Motion to remove the provincial portion of the HST for all homebuyers purchasing new homes as primary residences up to $1 million, and on a sliding scale up to $1.5 million — effectively ending HST on new homes in Ontario and making homeownership more attainable for thousands of families.
Dr. Adil Shamji, MPP for Don Valley East and Ontario Liberal Critic for Housing, said the motion is a direct response to the Ford government’s limited three-year proposal to remove HST only for first-time buyers.
“Doug Ford may be satisfied with a housing spark, but Ontario Liberals know we need a housing boom,” said Shamji. “His plan isn’t going to move the needle on supply or help people trying to find a home to raise a family or downsize. It’s tinkering at the edges after years of failed bills and empty promises.”
Shamji said the government’s narrow approach does not offer enough stability for workers or builders and does little to restore confidence in Ontario’s housing sector.
“This isn’t doing enough to give certainty or security to the people who build our homes or those who hope to own one,” he said. “If you work in construction, if you’re a young family searching for a home to raise your kids in, if you’re a senior looking to downsize, or if you’re a homebuilding company trying to avoid layoffs — Doug Ford’s plan does nothing for you.”
The Ontario Liberals’ proposal would immediately cut up to $80,000 off the price of a new home and trigger between 40,000 and 45,000 new housing starts next year while supporting tens of thousands of jobs across Ontario’s construction, steel, and lumber sectors.
“Our plan would build homes, create jobs, and strengthen Ontario’s economy,” said Shamji. “It’s cheaper to act now than to keep spinning our wheels — because if the collapse in housing spreads, it will cost billions more to fix. And if there’s a recession, it’ll be completely Doug Ford’s fault.”
Doug Ford’s housing plan leaves too many Ontarians behind. Ontario Liberals are offering a real solution — one that helps families, seniors, and workers, and finally gets Ontario building again.”
