Ontario Liberals Call on Doug Ford to Bring Back Cap on Ticket Resale Prices to Make Events Affordable Again

QUEEN’S PARK – Today, Rob Cerjanec, MPP for Ajax and Ontario Liberal Critic for Tourism, Sport, and Culture, tabled a motion to reinstate the former Ontario Liberal policy capping ticket resale prices at 50 percent above face value.

In 2017, the Ontario Liberal government passed the Ticket Sales Act to make concerts, sports, and live events affordable for families. Doug Ford’s government repealed the part of that law capping resale prices shortly after taking office — a move that served scalpers and major resale companies while driving up prices for everyone else.

“Families are already struggling to afford the basics like housing and groceries,” said Cerjanec. “If ticket resale prices had been capped over the last seven years, those families might have been able to afford a concert or game once in a while — but Doug Ford made even that out of reach.”

Cerjanec criticized the Ford government for rejecting his motion, calling it “a predictable move from a government that refuses to support good ideas if they don’t come from their side of the aisle.”

“Doug Ford needs to learn that actions have consequences,” said Cerjanec. “He scrapped this policy, and now thousands of Ontarians who wanted to see the Blue Jays in the World Series are priced out. If the Premier brings back the cap on resale tickets, it’ll be his best flip-flop yet.”
