QUEEN’S PARK — MPP John Fraser, Interim Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, issued the following statement calling for further cabinet resignations and full transparency from Doug Ford’s government over the growing hotel expense scandal:
Today’s revelations about the lavish lifestyle Stan Cho was living on taxpayers’ — and his supporters’ — dime raise even more questions. Yet despite all of that, he remains a member of Doug Ford’s PC caucus. I just don’t know how that is acceptable to Doug Ford.
Here’s the thing: Stan Cho is just the tip of the iceberg.
There are ministers and government members who spent excessive amounts of taxpayer money and abused taxpayer dollars. If Stan Cho did the right thing by resigning, then the others who did the same should do the right thing by resigning their cabinet and parliamentary assistant posts. That includes Hardeep Grewal, Nina Tangri, Charmaine Williams, David Smith, and Stephen Crawford.
In the month of November, PC members spent nearly $16,000 on hotel rooms under ‘special circumstances.’ But the Legislature only sat late one night that month — November 17. I know, because I was there.
The only other date that stands out is November 19, when the government held its leaders’ dinner and the House actually rose early. Was money claimed for hotel stays that night? We don’t know. That’s exactly why we need the receipts.
How is it that there was only one exceptional circumstance, but nearly $16,000 was spent? We want answers. We want receipts.
There is a pattern of abuse that shows how entitled this government has become. It shouldn’t be a surprise because culture starts at the top. When the boss — Doug Ford — buys a luxury private jet on the taxpayers’ dime, it sets the example for his team.
