Ford Failing Students in Classrooms and On Our Streets

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

25 September 2025

OTTAWA, ON. – Today, MPP John Fraser, Ontario Liberal Critic for Education, and MPP Andrea Hazell, Ontario Liberal Critic for Transportation, issued the following statement in response to Premier Ford’s decision to ban municipal speed cameras:

This Ford only goes in reverse. Doug Ford put in speed cameras to make our streets safer, and now he’s ripping them out.

Speed cameras are first and foremost about safe schools. They’re about protecting children and making sure the streets they walk on are safe.

Leadership means doing the right thing, not the popular thing. Doug Ford is failing that test.

— John Fraser, MPP for Ottawa South, Ontario Liberal Critic for Education

Speed cameras have reduced collisions and saved lives.

Yes, the program can and should be improved to maximize fairness, but scrapping it altogether is reckless. We shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bathwater just because the Premier thinks it will boost him in the polls.

It is irresponsible to make road safety policy without thoughtful and evidence-based consideration, and that is exactly what Premier Ford is doing.

— Andrea Hazell, MPP for Scarborough—Guildwood, Ontario Liberal Critic for Transportation
