Statement from Steven Del Duca on Korean Independence Day

Today we join with the people of Korea and Koreans all over the world in celebrating Korean Independence Day.

Marking the liberations of the Korean peninsula, Korean Independence Day is a commemoration of the sacrifices made. This day is one of few shared celebrations between North and South Korea, and it serves a reminder of the challenges still faced by the Korean people.

Korean-Canadians have long been a part of the life of Ontario, and Toronto was home to Canada’s first Korean immigrant, Tae-yon Whang. Today, Ontario is home to almost 100,000 Koreans, and a better place for it.

While festivities this year may be different than most, we look forward to celebrating with the Korean community for many years to come.

On behalf of the Ontario Liberal Party, and myself, I want to wish everyone celebrating a Happy Korean Independence Day.
