QUEEN’S PARK —The Ontario Liberal Caucus has released a statement following the tabling of the Standing Committee on Justice Policy’s report on Intimate Partner Violence, and their submission of a dissenting report:
We are grateful to the survivors, advocates, professionals, and organizations who came forward to share their experiences and expertise during the committee hearings. It takes extraordinary courage to speak publicly about something so personal and painful in the hope of improving government policy and saving countless lives.
Their voices should have been the foundation of this report and its recommendations. Instead, the government opted to take control of the committee report and weaken the recommendations made by these brave witnesses.
Intimate partner violence is a scourge that demands a collaborative and non-partisan approach to come up with real solutions. While the government’s report contains important ideas that are steps in the right direction, it ultimately falls short of delivering the comprehensive, actionable plan that Ontarians deserve.
Without clear commitments, timelines, accountability and real funding the report’s recommendations will not create the change that is desperately needed to end intimate partner violence. Survivors did not come forward for symbolic gestures, they came forward for real, actionable and measurable change. This report does not go far enough to meet that expectation, and the Ontario Liberals have therefore tabled a dissenting report.
Survivors deserve more than words. They deserve action. Anything less is a betrayal of the trust placed in us by those who came forward in the hope of building a safer Ontario.
