Statement from Ontario Liberal Leader, Steven Del Duca on funding to identify Residential School burial sites

TORONTO – Steven Del Duca, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, issued the following statement:

“The recent discovery of an unmarked grave for 215 Indigenous children at the Kamloops Residential School was shocking, but not surprising to the survivors who exposed the graves years ago to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. We owe the victims, their families, and the survivors a thorough investigation into each Residential School, so that we can understand the true damage done during those many years.

Ontario Liberals support the funding to identify and commemorate Residential School burial sites, and we are urging the government to reinstate the Indigenous curriculum changes they cancelled in 2018. We are also calling for a standalone Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation to be appointed to oversee the initiative. The findings of the investigation and the history of Indigenous Peoples must be taught to future generations so that history is never allowed to repeat itself.”
