Statement from Steven Del Duca on Black History Month

Steven Del Duca, Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, issued the following statement:

“Today, and for the entire month of February, we celebrate Black History Month. Black History Month is a time to celebrate the amazing contributions of so many Black Ontarians.

Black Ontarians have played a huge role in shaping the Ontario we know and love – but they continue to face systemic anti-Black racism each and every day. It’s unacceptable and we must reaffirm our commitment to working hand-in-hand with Black Ontarians to tear down the systemic barriers they continue to face.

This year, we also mark the 25th anniversary since Canada’s first Black woman to serve in the House of Commons, Jean Augustine, introduced the motion to designate February as Black History Month.

As Ontario rebuilds and recovers from COVID-19 in the months to come, we must ensure there is equity and justice for those who have been negatively impacted by the pandemic, including Black Ontarians. We have an unprecedented opportunity to build a system that prioritizes justice and equality for all, and to tackle the systemic challenges that Black Ontarians have faced and continue to face. We must do better, and it starts with taking action now.

During the month of February, I invite all Ontarians to participate in Black History Month and to honour the many Black Ontarians who have fought to break down barriers. It’s crucial that we all take the time to learn about the rich heritage, but painful history of Black communities in Ontario and to work together to ensure we keep on doing better.”
