Statement from Steven Del Duca Celebrating Mexican Independence Day

Today the people of Mexico, and Mexicans in Ontario and around the world, celebrate their independence.

On September 16, 1816, in the town of Dolores, priest Miguel Hidalgo rang his church’s bell to gather the people and urge them to take up arms and free themselves from Spanish rule. That day, now known as the Grito del Dolores (or, Cry of Dolores) was the spark of Mexico’s decade-long War of Independence, and on September 21, 1821, the people of Mexico declared their freedom.

Today, Mexicans around the world celebrate this day with music, food and art. Ontario, home to over 40,000 people of Mexican descent, has long been enriched by the beauty of Mexican culture and traditions. While this year’s celebrations are more virtual than we’re used to, we look forward to celebrating together in the future.

On behalf of the Ontario Liberal Party, I wish all those celebrating a happy Mexican Independence Day. Viva Mexico!
