Queen’s Park — Today, Conservative MPPs shut down an Ontario Liberal motion for unanimous consent to pass Bill 63, the Stop Ripping Off Fans Act at all stages, fast tracking legislation that would have made it more affordable for Ontarians to see their favourite sports teams and artists.
Once again, Doug Ford’s Conservatives are taking the side of corporations instead of cheering for the people of Ontario,” said Tyler Watt, MPP for Nepean. “People deserve a break from the stressors of daily life and be able to go to a concert or a sports game without paying outrageous prices. Ford’s Conservatives chose to protect ticket scalpers and lobbyists instead.”
The Stop Ripping Off Fans Act would have reinstated the 2017 Ontario Liberal cap on ticket resale prices, which prevented tickets from being resold for more than 50% above their original face value. Ford’s government scrapped the cap in 2019, a move that enriched major resale companies while driving up costs for fans across the province.
Ontarians deserve a government that stands up for fans, not for scalpers.
“Doug Ford doesn’t have a plan to make life more affordable,” said Stephanie Smyth, MPP for Toronto—St. Paul’s. “The Ford government doesn’t care about fairness, doesn’t care about accountability, and only cares about their friends. Three strikes, they’re out!”
