Ontario’s Liberals Request Auditor General Investigation into Home Care Supply Crisis

QUEEN’S PARK—This morning, Ontario Liberal MPP Dr. Adil Shamji requested that Ontario’s Auditor General audit Ontario Heath at Home and the major issues surrounding the procurement and distribution of necessary homecare supplies and the home care provider prequalification process.

In recent weeks, home care patients in Ontario have been going without the crucial medical supplies needed to receive care at home.

Last year, Doug Ford and Sylvia Jones passed Bill 135, which dissolved the 14 Local Integrated Health Networks (LIHNs) responsible for home care and created a home care superagency known as Ontario Health at Home.

A murky procurement process resulted in a single home care supplier receiving the right to provide critical home care supplies and equipment for all home care providers in Ontario. Ontario Health at Home and their supplier’s inability to deliver results has caused devastation for patients.

“Doling out refunds for home care supplies caregivers bought for patients is nowhere near enough. We need to know how this happened, why this happened, and who needs to be held responsible.”

— MPP Dr. Adil Shamji, Ontario Liberal Critic for Health

“Yesterday, the Premier said he wanted to get to the bottom of this, so he should be joining us in requesting the Auditor General do a special audit. Families deserve it.”

— MPP John Fraser, Ontario Liberal Critic for Seniors and Long-term Care
