Time for Doug Ford to Put Ontario Families First Instead of His Friends

QUEEN’S PARK — Today, the Ontario Liberals are calling on Doug Ford and Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy to include measures in Thursday’s Fall Economic Statement that would provide immediate pocketbook relief to struggling families.

“Day after day, this government continues to abdicate their responsibilities to Ontarians while finding news ways to distract from the RCMP’s criminal investigation into their $8.3 billion backroom deals,” said MPP John Fraser, Interim Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party. “Tomorrow’s Fall Economic Statement is an opportunity for the Ford Conservatives to take meaningful action to address the affordability crisis families are facing. They need to end their letter writing and finger-pointing, and provide Ontario families with the help they need.”

Ontario Liberals are hoping to see:

  • The reintroduction of real rent control;
  • A rise in social assistance rates;
  • A $50 per month boost to the Ontario Child Benefit; and
  • The creation of a new tax credit (up to $200/child at a maximum of $1000/year) to help parents put their kids through sports and extracurricular activities.

“Doug Ford and the Minister of Finance have parked billions of dollars in historically high contingency funds, short-changing our public services and families who are struggling to keep up with the soaring cost of living,” said MPP Stephanie Bowman, Ontario Liberal Finance Critic. “The government needs to stop hoarding taxpayer dollars and focus on presenting a real plan that reflects today’s reality and the issues currently faced by Ontarians.”
