Former Halton District School Board Chair and Trustee Andrea Grebenc Nominated as Ontario Liberal Candidate in Burlington

BURLINGTON, ON – Andrea Grebenc, a former school board trustee and former chair of the Halton District School Board, has been officially nominated as the Ontario Liberal candidate for Burlington.

“As the former chair of the Halton District School Board, Andrea Grebenc has been a passionate advocate for public education and a dedicated leader in her community.

“She’s seen firsthand how Doug Ford’s cuts to public education are pushing educators out of the system and making it harder for students to succeed. She understands the growing concerns of families — from the rising cost of living to the lack of homes that young people can afford.

“Andrea is ready to bring her experience and tireless dedication to Queen’s Park, fighting for stronger schools, better healthcare, and the support that families need to succeed. I’m proud to announce that Andrea is officially your Ontario Liberal candidate for Burlington!”

— Bonnie Crombie, Leader of Ontario’s Liberals

“I deeply understand the concerns of our community. I worry about my young adult children and the shrinking post-secondary opportunities, the lack of affordable housing, and rising unemployment in Ontario that will affect them directly.

“I see the growing homeless population in Burlington and lines at the local food banks. Families are struggling with the rising costs of food and essentials, making it harder to make ends meet. Emergency wait times at Joseph Brant Hospital are long, and procedure wait times can stretch for months or more. Healthcare workers are overburdened, and funding gaps in education are driving education workers out of the system.

“The challenges are clear, and we need strong, proven leadership to address them. That’s why I’m an Ontario Liberal and proud to be part of Bonnie Crombie’s team.”

Andrea Grebenc is a passionate advocate for her community. Her extensive leadership experience, deep community roots, and hands-on approach to public service make her an ideal candidate to represent Burlington residents.

Andrea was elected and served two terms as School Board Trustee for Wards 3 & 6 in Burlington and was elected as Chair of the Halton District School Board, leading the board from 2018 to 2021. Overseeing one of Ontario’s largest school boards, she helped govern a system with more than 100 facilities, approximately 10,000 staff, and 66,000 students with an $850 million annual operating budget. Andrea stood up to the current government repeatedly, advocating for change in education and delivering results. During the pandemic, Andrea demonstrated exceptional leadership, guiding the board through the unprecedented challenges faced by the education system.

Andrea’s connection to Burlington spans over 70 years, beginning when her family settled in the city after her father arrived as a refugee from the former Yugoslavia. She grew up in town and she and her husband are raising their three children in the community.

She earned her Honours Bachelor of Science degree from Wilfrid Laurier University and an Adult Education certificate from Conestoga College. Recently she acquired an ISC2 “Certified in Cybersecurity” qualification. Her commitment to lifelong learning has been a driving force throughout her career.

Andrea founded an IT consulting business in 1999 that focuses on eLearning, web design, and software training. Her business continues to support organizations with innovative solutions. As an educator, she has shared her expertise at McMaster University’s Centre for Continuing Education, teaching web design and development and helping with program development for over two decades.

Andrea’s dedication to public service was further highlighted in her 2022 campaign for Halton Regional Chair, where she garnered an impressive 20,000 votes, demonstrating the trust and support she has earned from the community.

Her involvement extends beyond education, as she currently serves on the Burlington Integrated Transportation Advisory Committee and is a member of the steering committee for the Appleby Line Street Festival, contributing to the vibrancy and connectivity of the community.
