In the summer of 2025, it was discovered that a part of Waterloo Region had a water capacity issue. Over the past three years, more water was being drawn from underground aquifers than was sustainable, leading the regional government to place a freeze on development in the northern part of Waterloo Region until more water supply can be generated.
There are many reasons for this unexpected shortfall, including equipment in need of repair, high population growth in recent years, lack of infrastructure to move water from southern Waterloo Region (which still has capacity) to northern Waterloo Region, and errors in water usage calculations.
The implications of this water capacity issue are significant as it could affect the ability of Waterloo Region to grow in the future.
To discuss this important issue, its causes, and the possible solutions, the Provincial Liberal Associations in Waterloo Region have organized a Water Capacity Forum with the following panelists:
- Kevin Eby – Former Ontario Greenbelt Council member and former Director of Community Planning for Waterloo Region
- Kevin Thomason – Vice-Chair, Grand River Environmental Network
- Julie Wright – Our Living Waters National Director and City of Waterloo Councillor
The forum will be moderated by Neil Lackey.
- 7:00 – 8:45 PM – Forum
- 8:45 – 9:15 PM – Mix & Mingle
