TORONTO – Steven Del Duca, Leader of the Ontario Liberals, made the following statement:
Despite repeated calls for Doug Ford to step up and show decisive leadership in order to successfully confront the second wave of COVID-19, he has dithered and delayed while the numbers of new infections has skyrocketed.
It is clear that Doug Ford has lost control and he is scrambling to figure out what to do next.
Earlier this week, I called on Ford to target regional hotspots and move them temporarily into a modified stage 2, while providing immediate financial compensation to help impacted small business entrepreneurs.
And Ford refused to do it.
The Ontario Hospital Association, the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, Toronto Public Health and leading medical experts made similar calls.
And Ford refused to do it.
Ford’s own Chief Medical Officer of Health told reporters that he and Ford’s Command Table have provided the government with advice regarding stronger measures to control the spread of COVID-19.
And Ford has dithered and delayed while sowing seeds of confusion with his incoherent and inconsistent answers.
Ontarians need to know what advice Ford has been given and why he has ignored that advice while the number of positive cases has been climbing steadily. Ontarians deserve to know why Ford has waited so long to take the action that’s needed. Every day of dithering and delays puts lives and livelihoods at risk.
We cannot afford any more incoherence and incompetence. We need real leadership that understands the gravity of the situation and has the capacity to get the job done.
