Freedom of Information (FOI) is one of the most basic tools Ontarians have to hold their government accountable. And Doug Ford just took it away and hoped no one would notice.
The Ford government pushed through sweeping changes to Ontario’s FOI laws — quietly, quickly, and without proper public scrutiny. They pulled the bill from committee to avoid hearings, debated it under the cover of night, and rushed it into law.
Worse still, they made these changes retroactive — killing active FOI requests, appeals, and court cases that were already underway.
Why? Because FOI works.
Freedom of Information requests have helped uncover some of the biggest scandals of Doug Ford, from the Greenbelt giveaways, the misuse of the Skills Development Fund to the Premier’s use of a private luxury jet. Ontarians deserve to know what their government is doing with their taxpayer dollars, and these scandals only came to light because Ontarians had the right to ask questions and get answers.
Now, Doug Ford has changed the rules to shield himself and his government from scrutiny. His new law removes the Premier’s office, ministers, and political staff from FOI coverage — meaning key records about government decisions could be hidden from the public entirely.
The Ontario Liberals are fighting back — because this fight isn’t over. We are standing up for your right to know, your right to transparency, and your right to a government that answers to the people.
